Scaling & Root Planing is an active infection treatment method that removes hard to reach plaque, calculus and bacteria from under the gums. Scaling means scraping off the tartar from above and below the gum line. Root planing gets rid of rough spots on the tooth root where the germs gather, and helps remove bacteria that contribute to periodontal disease. In some cases a laser may be used to further remove plaque and tartar. This procedure can result in less bleeding, swelling, and discomfort compared to traditional scaling and root planing methods.
Plaque is a structured resilient yellow-grayish substance that adheres to the surface of your teeth. It is a bio-film that contains bacteria, saliva and food particles. Plaque is extremely difficult to remove by rinsing or using sprays but can be removed with brushing and flossing, often only requiring fairly light pressure. The longer plaque remains on your teeth the harder it gets, forming into calculus. Calculus is the hard deposits stuck to your teeth usually covered by a layer or plaque. It is an active infection that cannot be removed with brushing or flossing alone. It required the treatments of Scaling and Root planing, laser therapy and/or antimicrobial rinses.
